I have a confession to make.
Most days I feel like I'm really failing my kids in the "education" department.
Ok, yes, they are only 14 months and 2 1/2, so its not like we should be working on long division or anything. In fact, I don't really know WHAT it is we should be working on.
I do know that we watch entirely too much tv, don't do enough reading, and certainly don't spend our day focusing on God as much as I pictured we would.
I really want to be a better mom.
I want my kids to grow up with great memories of their childhood.
I want them to express their creativity in whatever ways they want to.
And most importantly, I want them to know who Jesus is so they can make the decision to follow Him when that time comes for them.
I was not raised knowing anything about Jesus, so I don't really know firsthand what it looks like to raise my kids that way. I'm kinda "winging it". I look at other people's blogs, or see things my friends are doing, and I feel as though I'm seriously falling short.
So today I decided to do a fun craft to get our creative juices flowing, and learn a little bit about God along the way!
I grabbed Mylo's little Bible, opened to the first chapter, and went from there.
I call it the "Creation Craft". I downloaded pictures from Microsoft Clipart that had to do with what God did those first 7 days when He created the world. I printed them out, and we colored them. Then we glued them up on a big timeline.
Mylo had a BLAST doing this and he was so proud!
Our inspiration...

Give this kid some markers and a glue stick and he's happy as can be...

Putting the "stickers" on...

Our finished "Creation Craft"...

Then later on once Phin was up from his nap, he grabbed this, handed it to me and...

"BA - BULLLLL"
(that's BIBLE for those of you who don't speak like a 14 month old.)
So maybe I'm not doing such a bad job after all!!
And by the way, I'm open to any ideas, things that work for you, etc! Leave me a comment with your ideas, links to your blog, other websites, etc. :)

Kate,
That is awesome and you guys are doing a very Godly task in raising the boys. Keep it up girl !! nana and pop pops.
there is a great website which shows different crafting ideas for all ages. it's really great:
http://www.alphamom.com/holiday/2010/01/dangling_garland_valentines.php
for the "godly" education: i learned that it's really important to celebrate the holidays, like easter for example. we do our own good friday lesson, we try to do "fasting" before and so on. kids learn a lot from our "role-modeling", so showing them how to serve god, reading the bible, talking about Him is really great!
have fun crafting!
Kate, what a fabulous idea!!!!!!!! I applaud you for trying something like that; I never did stuff like that with my kids until this year when we started homeschooling, and I felt just like what you said about not doing as much as you'd imagined doing. You're off to a great start!!! We might just do that Creation Craft this summer...
This is great! Thanks for the idea.
Kate, I just wanted to encourage you with this...I was blessed to be raised in a Christian home, but both my parents were not, so I am sure that they felt that they were "winging it" at times, too. We didn't do a whole lot of intentional and educational things, but as I look back, what impacted me the most is that a)both of my parents sacrificed and gave me their time and b)I got to see them live out their faith and trust God in daily life. Be encouraged that no matter what you do or don't do, your kiddos will someday appreciate so much the time you have given them and seeing you live out your faith. :)
PS-I think your creation craft ROCKS! :)
Travis is great at comimg up with lessons for the boys for morning devotions.. he could give u better ideas than me :)
I will have to look at the bible we use for them tho.. cause our kids love it.. has good pics and its not to kiddy.
