I got another tattoo for my 30th birthday. It is a hot pink star on my wrist...something I've wanted for several years. So I got it done a week ago.

I can't say that I'm loving it quite yet, because it is not healing like my other tattoos have. It is INCREDIBLY sore, really puffy, and extra red around it. Which is kind of difficult to tell the difference between the skin redness, and the actual tattoo since its a pink tattoo.

It looked so bad yesterday, that I was convinced it was infected. I called my doctor and of course couldn't get in that day. I didn't want to go to Urgent Care because its like $150. But just my luck, it happened to be the night our church has a free medical clinic! And better yet, my dermatologist volunteers there. Dr. Karikomi was there last night, and so I was able to go see him. Perfect!
He said its most likely that I'm having a reaction to the ink. Red tattoos can cause all sorts of weird reactions due to the mercury in the ink. It's called "red reaction". Problems can range from mild to severe, but all the symptoms I'm having fall into this category. GREAT. Just what I need!
So I'm really hoping this "red reaction" I'm having is more on the mild side, and will not have lasting effects. Dr. K also gave me antibiotics just in case its an infection. He recommended some topical creams too...and it just so happens my mother in law works for him and can get those as samples for me. :)
Err. I'm pretty bummed about this...I really hope the tattoo ends up looking good and I don't have any major health complications from it! Who would've guessed?! So think twice before you get a red or pink tattoo!

I LOVE tatoos... i read an article once about what was in the ink and how it affects your body. It will make me think twice before I ink up... even though i really want to! :)
i'm sure it will look great once it heals.

Ow Kate, that looks really painful. :-) I can't wait to see it once it's healed. "Red reaction?" Who ever heard of that!!
wheres your other tattoo?!
isnt it on ur foot?
i think its cute, i did hear red is a iffy ink to get, due to reactions like that. heres hoping urs heals up nicely. id only ever get black because my skin is so sensitive. im debating a 2nd tattoo :)
I love your tatoo, I hope it heals up well. It looks like it hurts really bad. I have heard of the red reaction, but who would have thought? I hope it starts feeling better soon!
O.U.C.H.!!!!! I think it looks even more painful 'cause it's pink! I love your white feet tatoos...
Wow! I had no idea red ink could do that. Mine is such a pale peach color so I didn't have any problem other than the whole sun burn feeling. I'm so sorry that happened. I know how much you want it to be perfect after its done so I'm sure this is dissapointing but chin up. Once it heals you will love it I'm sure. It's such a blessing your doctor was at the church on that day. I want a second tattoo but my husband is being annoying about it. He has like 4. LOL hope you feel better soon. It must be hard trying to take care of the little ones with that pain.
